Chantal Bernier

Chantal Bernier co-chairs Dentons' Global Privacy and Cybersecurity Group and is part of the Canadian Privacy and Cybersecurity practice. She's the only former privacy regulator practicing law in Canada. Chantal led numerous national and international privacy investigations, audits, and policy developments during her tenure as head of the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. She uses her extensive government experience to offer strategic counsel on corporate management challenges in compliance with legal standards. Chantal is multilingual, working in French, English, Italian, and Spanish, and actively participates in international forums. Her roles include chairing the Statistics Canada Advisory Council and memberships in various national security and data governance bodies.

Elizabeth Denham CBE

Elizabeth Denham CBE, with her extensive regulatory background, served as the UK Information Commissioner from 2016 to 2021 and earlier in Canada. As the ICO head, she led the world's largest data protection regulator and chaired the Global Privacy Assembly. Her tenure is noted for pioneering investigations into data misuse, including political micro-targeting, data brokers, and the use of facial recognition. Denham drafted the 'privacy by design' Children's Code, setting international standards for child online safety. Her honors include a CBE in 2019, the BCS Society Medal in 2020, and an honorary doctorate in 2021 for her leadership in information rights. Currently, she consults internationally on tech and AI data governance, serves as the Chief Strategist for the Information Accountability Foundation, and is a trustee for the children’s safety charity, 5 Rights.

Khaled El Emam

Dr. Khaled El Emam is the Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Medical AI at the University of Ottawa, where he is a Professor in the School of Epidemiology and Public Health. He is also a Senior Scientist at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute. Khaled has founded or co-founded six product and services companies involved with data management and data analytics, with some having successful exits. Prior to his academic roles, he was a Senior Research Officer at the National Research Council of Canada. He also served as the head of the Quantitative Methods Group at the Fraunhofer Institute in Kaiserslautern, Germany. He has a PhD from the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, King’s College, at the University of London, England.

Colette Stewart

Colette Stewart, Managing Counsel at Interac Corp, leads the company's evolving Privacy Management Program, aligning compliance with corporate innovation. Her career spans multiple sectors including retail and telecommunications, and she holds a Law degree and a Harvard Business School Certificate in Strategy. Beyond her role, Colette is dedicated to mentoring, particularly in supporting Black future lawyers, and contributes to community and international projects. Her insights on privacy have been featured in major publications.

Alex Wackett

Alex, a Senior Manager at PwC Canada's Privacy and Data Trust practice, has enhanced privacy programs across various industries, ensuring compliance through risk-managed solutions. Starting her career in technology, she became a Privacy by Design Consultant, then Director of Data Ethics and Privacy, expanding her team's international influence. Recognized by industry peers and holding several IAPP certifications including CIPP/C and CIPP/E, Alex’s approach to privacy is shaped by her early experiences solving complex challenges.

Carlos Chalico 

Carlos is a cybersecurity and privacy professional with 25+ years of experience. He started his career with EY in Mexico City back in 1996, since then , he has helped many organizations in Latin America, The Caribbean, Europe, US and Canada resolve cybersecurity and privacy related issues. In addition to helping EY build a better working world, Carlos is an instructor with the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies where he teaches cybersecurity and privacy.  Carlos also volunteers for ISACA Toronto, IAPP Canada and ALPFA Canada.    

Abigail Carter-Langford

Abigail joined Infoway in 2017, dedicating her expertise to advancing the organization's commitment to health information governance, including the crucial areas of privacy and security of personal health information. She also oversees Infoway’s risk management, compliance, and legal functions. Prior to this role, Abigail served as Vice President of Human Resources and Chief Privacy Officer at eHealth Ontario, and as Chief Privacy Officer at the University Health Network. Her professional qualifications include certifications as a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), and Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/C). Additionally, she holds a Masters in Health Law from Osgoode Hall Law School.

Justine Gauthier

As the General Counsel & Head of AI Governance of Mila, a leading artificial intelligence research institute, Justine Gauthier is at the forefront of the intricate legal and ethical realms of advanced machine learning technologies. Leading a seasoned legal team, Justine provides strategic counsel on the legal, regulatory, and ethical considerations inherent in pushing the boundaries of AI innovation. In addition to her responsibilities as Mila’s General Counsel, Corporate Secretary and Privacy Officer, Justine also leads Mila’s efforts in the burgeoning field of AI Governance, orchestrating organizational-level governance strategies as well as engaging with key stakeholders who are shaping the AI paradigm of tomorrow. 

Rosario Cartagena

Rosario is special counsel in Osler’s Privacy and Data Management group, with over 20 years of experience in health system stakeholder engagement. Her practice focuses on health privacy law, data governance, information security, and risk management. She advises on cybersecurity, compliance, AI frameworks, and regulatory issues. As Chief Privacy and Legal Officer at ICES, Rosario oversees a team of experts in privacy, legal, and risk management. Her background includes working in the health law group at a national firm, public sector agencies, and a post-grad internship at Harvard School of Public Health. She holds a CIPP/C, a Health Law Certificate, and an LLM.
